Social Media MarketingEvery business needs to be on social media.

No matter how small your company is, a presence on social media platforms such as Twitter or Facebook is paramount.

Social media can help elevate your audience and customer base dramatically, supporting and growing your brand while building relationships with current and new customers. In today’s world, everyone researches products online and seeks recommendations from other consumers, so the best thing for businesses is to have a stand out presence online.

So which platform is best for you? There are plenty of networks for you to choose from, it’s just finding the right one for your brand image.

• Facebook and Twitter are the best platforms for brand awareness and overall promotion, due to their sizeable and diverse user base.
• Instagram is perfect for brands that are heavy on images and want to reach out to young adults, such as clothing companies or retailers.
• Pinterest, again, is great for companies who primarily use images to promote their brand, however is also excellent for companies that sell jewellery or clothes, as Pinterest’s user base is predominantly women.
• Whilst there are other social media platforms, these are the top ones you should consider looking at.

Understand your goals when using social media, so understanding where you want to go and what you want to achieve with social media marketing. Do you want to raise awareness of your brand? Are you looking to increase sales? Wanting to build customer loyalty? Pick one or two goals and focus on them.

You don’t want to bombard your followers with constant Tweets or Facebook posts but you do want to post on a regular basis, keeping quality over quantity in mind. Customers shop at small businesses for value, so don’t be afraid to have a personality online and keep sharing things that people will want to come back to you for.

Create your perfect customer and target them on social media. You’re wasting your time if you’re targeting everyone when you only want to aim your products at a specific age range. You need to sit down and create a detailed description of your perfect customer. Include their age, gender, income etc., and once this customer has been created, choose the right message to reach out to them.

Social media is great for checking out the competition and letting you know what works and what doesn’t – after all, they are targeting the same audience so why not learn from their mistakes (or successes)? Pick the top three or four competitors, find out what social networks they are currently active on and study their content. Look at the language they use, who they reference to and ultimately, the engagements they receive based on their social media strategy.
