Leeds businesses could face fines for allowing their staff to park for free

Businesses in Leeds could find themselves faced with a workplace ‘parking tax’ fine for allowing employees to park for free on their premises in the not too distant future.

The initiative is part of a range of ideas under consideration as a means to combating the negative traffic problems and air pollution issues facing the city.

There are also other ideas in the pipeline such as a city centre levy for motorists and free parking for electric vehicles. Motorists with vehicles that do not meet with new greener engine standards will also have to pay a daily charge for entering Leeds Clean Air Zone (CAZ)

Charging staff to park at the workplace is bound to be controversial as employers, who are responsible for paying the ‘parking tax’ can choose to reclaim the cost from their employees.

Nottingham as already adopted the scheme, which helps to pay for transport repairs and new infrastructure projects.
