University students are planning a colourful carnival in support of the Telegraph & Argus Crocus Cancer Appeal.

There will be performances from cheerleading, African arts and ju-jitsu societies and people of all ages and abilities can try a variety of activities for free or for a small donation The students have held many events for the appeal and will support it again next weekend with their Colours Carnival, when they showcase their skills and raise money at the same time Student organiser Gemma Jackson said: “We wanted to organise something that showcases all the hard work done by sports and societies. So the idea of Colours Carnival was born.

“By getting students, university staff and the local community to come, students have a chance to represent Team Bradford and the university and also fundraise for deserving charities.

“People can expect a lot of fun and plenty of music and dance.”

The T&A Bradford Crocus Cancer Appeal aims to raise £1 million towards making the city’s ground-breaking work to fight the disease faster than ever before.

The campaign, which is being run with the university, Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust and Yorkshire Cancer Research, will use the money towards a hi-tech machine that could hold the breakthrough to developing less toxic and more targeted tumour-blasting cancer treatments. Colours Carnival will take place in the Student Central area of the university in Richmond Road next Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Meanwhile businesses have been pulling in the pounds for the appeal. More than £700 was raised at an auction and raffle at the first meeting of a new city business networking group. The inaugural monthly Bradford Means Business gathering, hosted jointly by the Telegraph & Argus and the Yorkshire Enterprise Network, attracted more than 120 people.

Professor Laurence H Patterson, director of the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics and Cancer Drug Discovery programme at the university, was the key speaker.
