Back in the day, the UK used to have a system of Technical Colleges and Polytechnics that trained apprentices and gave them the skills to keep the county’s manufacturing industries supplied with a skilled workforce.
Fast forward 35 years and the UK is now facing a serious skills shortage as apprenticeships in the manufacturing sector are in decline. A recent survey by Sheffield City Region shows that Yorkshire businesses are experiencing down turns in performance as a result of not been able to find worker in the UK with relevant skills. This as forced companies to turn to EU countries where relevant skills are still taught.
The next government must reverse this trend and close the skills gap if our industries are not to lose valuable orders to overseas competitors.
