While we’re in lockdown we’re not going to see much of God’s Own County other than what we see from the windows of our houses or possibly our cars on the way to and from the supermarket or chemist. So here's the list of top 10 selected classic films to watch:
#10 Room At The Top, Halifax
Made in 1959. This critically acclaimed drama, partly filmed in Halifax, stars Lawrence Harvey as a social climber who recklessly pursues the daughter of an industrial magnate..
#9 Rita, Sue and Bob Too, Bradford
Made in 1987. This morally ambiguous tale stars Siobhan Finneran and Michelle Holmes as two teenage schoolgirls from a Bradford council estate who embark on an affair with a married man from a more affluent part of the city.
#8 Railway Children, Keighley
This 1970 adaptation of the E Nesbit children’s classic follows an affluent London family who are forced to live up North in poverty after their dad is arrested on suspicion of being a spy.
#7 Little Voice, Scarborough
Made in 1999. This musical, set in Scarborough, stars Jane Horrocks as a reclusive young woman with an incredible singing voice.
#6 Kes, Barnsley
Made in 1969. While it probably isn’t the greatest mood lifter, this 1969 Ken Loach-directed tale of a young boy and his pet kestrel is a certified classic.
#5 Jane Eyre, Harrogate
Made in 1996. Charlotte Bronte’s 1847 has been adapted for the big screen several times but the 1996 version, starring William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg, has among the best reviews.
#4 The Full Monty, Sheffield
Made in 1997. A group of unemployed steelworkers from Sheffield become strippers to make enough cash to move elsewhere and so Gaz, the main character, can see his son. This unlikely smash was rated the 25th best British film of the 20th century by the British Film Institute.
#3 FairyTale: A True Story, Bingley
Made in 1997. Loosely based on the Cottingley Fairies, this fantasy depicts the story of two girls who are photographed with what appear to be genuine fairies. The Cottingley Fairies, named after the place near Bingley where the photos were taken, caused a public storm 100 years ago with some convinced they were scientific proof about the existence of fairies.
#2 Brassed Off, Halifax
This 1996 comedy-drama, starring Ewan McGregor, Pete Postlethwaite and Tara Fitzgerald, follows a colliery band’s troubles 10 years after the closure of their pit. The film is based on the story of Grimethorpe Colliery Band who provide this romantic film’s soundtrack.
#1 Billy Liar, Bradford
This 1963 kitchen sink drama/comedy set in Bradford stars Tom Courtenay as Billy Fisher, a young man who lives with his parents and creates a fantasy world around himself to alleviate his boredom. Billy Liar, also starring Julie Christie, Wilfred Pickles and Mona Washbourne, was ranked the 12th greatest British film of all time by Total Film.
